“Give us this day our daily bread.”    Matthew 6:11 (NAS)

Jesus leads us here to praying for our personal needs, but most of us have never experienced the lack of food for the day. Why would He tell us to pray for what we already possess? Perhaps Jesus is looking from a different viewpoint. You wouldn’t pray for what you already have, so to pray this prayer you must relinquish possession. Surrender everything- even your daily bread. When you have nothing, God can give you everything, and the true nature of all that you thought was yours is wonderfully revealed. It is all a gift from your heavenly Father. Let go of everything- it’s all His anyway. Then you will have eyes to see everything you have taken for granted as the blessing it truly is.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for daily bread, and for water to drink, and coffee and comfortable homes and clothes to wear. Thank You for our Bibles to read and our loved ones to care for, and for jobs that enable us to pay the bills, and for beds to lie down and rest. Thank You for teaching us to pray for daily bread so we will receive it everyday as a gift from Your hand.

I love You, Lord.

Amen.
