And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”  Genesis 14:19- 20 (ESV)

The name El Elyon, God Most High is first used by the priest, Melchizedek when he blesses Abram after battle. El, a shortened form of Elohim, refers to God’s strength; Elyon indicates that there are no bounds to His power- He is the strongest and highest. His authority spans all time and place. The name identifies Him as the One True God as opposed to the pagan gods of the defeated kings. El Elyon gave Abram victory over armies much larger and more powerful than his own band of servants and friends. For us, El Elyon is a name of majesty, power and dominion. He is the sovereign Creator and possessor of heaven and earth. It reminds us to come to Him with reverence and to elevate Him above all else. We serve God Most High- we have nothing to fear.

Dear Lord,

You are high above all creation, nations and governments. Our strength is in You. The truth of Your sovereignty enables us to face the most difficult circumstances. Your name encourages our hearts and calms our fears. Thank You for choosing to protect Your people.

I love You, Lord.

Amen.
