Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (NAS)
We usually enjoy receiving an invitation; it implies some level of friendship and favor. It reminds us that we are valued and promises us something good to look forward to. Jesus extends several timeless invitations to His followers, and He is well pleased when we accept them. His invitation to rest is twofold. In one sense, He offers a respite from the busy-ness and routine of work- a time to sit at His feet and listen to His words, knowing our need for renewal. He also offers rest for the weariness of our souls. Rather than a list of rules and regulations too burdensome to follow, Jesus offers Himself. Our invitation is a simple call to trust Him personally. The promise is spiritual relief and internal peace, along with Jesus’ own strength to relieve the burdens we carry.
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for the invitations You extend to us; they are beautiful expressions of Your love. I pray for the sensitivity to take Your words to heart, and the boldness to share Your invitations with others.
I love You, Lord.
Amen.
