A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.  Proverbs 14:30 (ESV)

Envy can be difficult to recognize in ourselves. We may not think it’s a problem, but it affects our actions and decisions more than we realize. Most of us continually compare ourselves to others, and comparison breeds envy. We want what we see- physical beauty, a lovely home, the most remarkable children, a successful career or ministry. We can get caught up in a never-ending race to do more and be more- dissatisfied with ourselves and constantly aspiring to be someone God never intended us to be. But if we see ourselves as God sees us, envy simply cannot thrive. We see who we truly are- a sinner saved by the extravagant grace and boundless love of our Savior. Our goal then, is to honor Him and please Him instead of impressing people.

Dear Lord,

There is no competition for Your love. You give it freely and abundantly. I didn’t earn it or deserve it- You gave it anyway. Pleas remind me that I am Your creation. I don’t need the approval of anyone else to give me value. I choose a tranquil heart over anything the world has to offer.

I love You, Lord.

Amen.
