For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.  Galatians 5:17 (NAS)

In the war between our flesh and the Spirit of God who resides within us, the temptation to rely on self figures prominently. We can dress it up with words like strength, ability, and leadership, and none of these are negative qualities to possess. But left unchecked, dependance on self sets a false king on the throne of our hearts. Thinking that we can find comfort, security, and success by our own effort is a false image based on pride. Every good thing we have, including our abilities and opportunities, is a gift from our gracious heavenly Father. Cultivate wholehearted trust in God alone. The same God who holds the world in place holds You in His loving hands.

Dear Lord,

I am so glad that You are in control and I’m not. When I am tempted to think I’m managing life pretty well, unforeseen circumstances inevitably arise. But You are aware of my past, present, and future, and I trust You to work all things together for good. Thank You for being a wise and loving Father. You are my Strong Tower.

I love You, Lord.

Amen.
