But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. Psalm 3:3 ESV

Have you ever witnessed a child who was distressed and inconsolable until a parent gently lifted the child’s chin upward, to meet the gaze of their loving eyes?  This picture comes to mind when I read this verse.  David was running for his life when he wrote this psalm, and in the previous verses he pours out his heart to God.  But then he gazes upward, and knows that God is his protector and shield.

Father God,

Sometimes I am that child who feels inconsolable. In times of distress and heartache, help me to look upward, into Your loving eyes instead of focusing on horizontal things.  Thank you for being my loving Father who surrounds me with Your peace, Your protection, and Your glory.  I have nothing to fear for You are with me.  Send me to someone who needs to hear about Your love today.
