You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.  Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV

New Year, new beginnings! God calls us to let go of our former selves, just as we would discard worn-out clothes, leaving behind pride, greed, envy, and hatred. As Christians, we are part of a renewed humanity, continually seeking to reshape ourselves into the likeness of Christ. Do you have areas of your life that you would like to leave behind as you seek to develop a more Christ-like character?  Are you facing particular challenges?  If so, ask God to guide you in applying His principles in your current situation.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I praise you for your patience and compassion. Thank you for loving me and enabling me to live in freedom. Thank you that when I became a believer, I was empowered to “put off the old self,” and pursue a lifestyle of holiness and righteousness.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, I am renewed each day and wrapped in purity. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the strength You have given me. I ask You to renew my mind and reveal anything from my old ways that may be holding me back from a closer walk with You. Guide me to live a life that reflects your character and purpose, as I continually seek to be made new in Christ Jesus. I am grateful for the freedom You have given me from my past. I joyfully embrace a new life in You.
